Maxspace Is Finally Here

20 November 2024

Maxspace is finally here after a looong three days of building it. The site's backend is hosted on Neocities, a spiritual successor to the now-defunct Geocities. If you've somehow not noticed, the site's design is a fun homage to the old-school default Myspace layout.

This idea isn't exactly super groundbreaking; there are plenty of other Myspace-inspired sites out there, and some of them go craaazy with the graphics. But my goal was simple: create a quirky vanity website- a personal spin on a "Linktree". I wanted to go full-on Y2K.

Imma keep it real wih you, I am not a coder. So please excuse the use of deprecated code, or any other bad habits you spot if you snoop through the source code! That said, I poured a lot of love into recreating the classic Myspace look, from the layout and fonts to the colors. I even exported a lot of the still images as .gifs with low settings to get that dithered look!

It's funny to think about... Back in 2005, when I was glued to Myspace.com, I went out of my way to heavily customize my page. I stripped out the branding, used code to hide the baked-in links and ads to make it look like a completely custom website. And now, almost two decades later, here I am meticulously recreating the default Myspace profile.

Anyway, have fun exploring the site! I'll keep it updated with new photos, graphics, and more. I'm also planning to add additional "hidden shrines." Have you found the ones for my cats, Luka and Mylo, yet?

Alright. Hyperfixation complete. Back to metal detecting.
